The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list across 12 states and union territories, including Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. As part of this initiative, election officials are going door-to-door in districts such as Chennai, Erode, and Trichy, distributing voter forms and verifying voter details.
Special Revision Across 12 States and UTs
Following the successful completion of the first phase of the voter list revision in Bihar, where the Election Commission added 21.53 lakh new voters and removed 3.66 lakh names, the total number of registered voters in the state increased to 7.42 crore.
Now, in the second phase, the special revision is being carried out in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Puducherry, Goa, Chhattisgarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep.
Assembly Elections Next Year
Assembly elections are expected to be held next year in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal, making this voter list revision a crucial process for ensuring an accurate and updated electoral roll.
How the Enumeration Will Be Conducted
Election officials will visit households whose names appear in the final voter lists published in 2002 and 2005. They will collect updated details and distribute voter enumeration forms.
- Residents aged 18 and above will receive application and affidavit forms to be filled and submitted later with valid documents.
- Polling officials will visit each household up to three times to collect the completed forms.
- Those whose names were not listed in the 2002 and 2005 rolls can provide information about their family members (parents, grandparents) to verify eligibility.
- Their names can be added to the draft voter list, which will be released on December 9 after verifying the documents.
However, voters who have changed their address or moved locations will not be automatically included in the draft list. New voters and those who recently turned 18 can submit their applications from December 7 to January 3, 2026, to be included in the final voter list to be published on February 7, 2026.
