Nor many of us would be aware of a condition termed as obstructive sleep apnea or OSA!!
Now, Chennai doctors have warned that this neglected issue might affect the health of many individuals and also their quality of their lives. The need to identify the OSA condition and treat it to avoid further complications is very essential now. The surprising piece of information is that atleast one third of an adult`s life is spent in sleeping. For the healthy metabolism, sleep is very essential for any person and any sleeping disturbance would affect the next day`s activities. This was according to Dr. K. Supraja , pulmonologist at MMM Hospitals, Chennai.
The narrowing of the upper part of the airways would make a person snore while sleeping. It is learnt that further compression could lead to cessation of breathing when the brain recognises it and it would wake up the person. It is true that this cycle keeps going on for 8 hours during sleeping. It must be noted that this awakening of the person would make him or her feel fatigued even after 8 hours of sleeping. After some period of time, the person might show slight pressure changes, heart rates, oxygen levels in the body etc.
Director of cardiology at MMM Hospitals, Dr. Ajit Mullasari spoke about how patients with pre-existing cardiac issues might have heart attack and even sudden death due to OSA. Chronic health issues like stroke, coronary heart disease, BP, diabetes etc would get worse due to OSA.
