The nodal statutory body for the technical education in India, AICTE or All India Council for Technical Education has now made important subjects like mathematics and physics at class-12 level optional for admission to BE and B. Tech courses for the academic year 2021-22.

It is well known that till now class-12 level mathematics and physics are mandatory for admission into the UG programmes of engineering and technology.  Now, AICTE has released an approval process handbook for 2021-2022 and it has changed the eligibility criteria for the engineering admissions.

It is now said that this amazing move from AICTE would have far reaching implications for the engineering education in India. For being eligible for engineering admissions, the students need to pass 10 + 2 with any 3 of these subjects like physics/mathematics/chemistry/ Computer science/electronics/IT/biology/informative practices/biotechnology/technical vocational subject/agriculture/engineering physics/business studies/entrepreneurship etc.

In the above subjects taken together, a candidate needs to score 45% marks (general category) and 40% marks (reserved category). For the sake of achieving learning outcomes of the programme, bridge courses like mathematics, physics and engineering drawing would be offered by the universities to those students coming from diverse backgrounds.

However, this move by AICTE is not appreciated by all and there are few academicians who have been criticizing also. Truth is that mathematics subject is the foundation of all engineering courses and bridge course is a remedial course for those who are weak in mathematics subject. This was revealed by Mr. S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, vice-chancellor of SASTRA University. He spoke about how AICTE`s model curriculum for engineering programmes has mathematics till 5th semester in all the programmes and how subjects like maths and physics must be compulsory for all the engineering courses. It was mentioned by Mr. Anil D Sahasrabudhe, chairman of AICTE that it was not the question of optional.
