Ever since it was announced that the students studying in classes 5 and 8 would be writing board examinations, parents and students have been feeling tensed about many things.  Now, they could breathe a sigh of relief.

The school education minister, Mr K.A. Sengottaiyan on Tuesday announced that the students studying classes 5 and 8 could write their board examinations in their respective schools and not in the common exam centres.

It must not be forgotten that in the earlier circular the directorate of elementary examination had said that only primary and middle schools with a minimum of 10 students would be made as exam centres for the class 5 and class 8 board examinations. The circular also mentioned that whenever the strength was less than 10 then the students were t write their exams in the nearby school.

The school education minister later explained about how the circular was issued before consultation and how he had instructed the officials to take steps to conduct exams for the students of classes 5 and 8 in their own schools even if the students strength was less than 10.

To access the learning outcome of the students of classes 5 and 8, board examinations would be conducted and all the students appearing for the exams would pass. Mr Sengottaiyan mentioned that there was no need for concern about the failures. Even if no students clear the board examinations for classes 5 and 8, no students would be detained and this was announced by the school education department.

Under the chief educational officers, model question papers for the board examinations would be released by district level examination boards. The point t be noted is the board exam would be conducted for 60 marks and the rest 40 marks would be based on the formative assessments conducted in the classroom.

The students of class 5 would be writing board exams on basic concepts, practices and learning outcomes of 3 subjects like Tamil, English and Maths. Students of class 8 would be writing board examinations on basic concepts, content and learning outcomes of subjects like Maths, Tamil, English, Sciences and Social Sciences.
