Severe Traffic Congestion at Triplicane High Road–Barathi Salai Junction in Chennai

Commuters passing through the Triplicane High Road–Barathi Salai junction are facing severe traffic congestion every day, especially during peak hours. The narrow road and increasing number of vehicles have turned this busy stretch into a major bottleneck.

During the morning and evening rush, buses, cars, and two-wheelers move at a very slow pace, with vehicles often coming to a complete halt. This has led to frequent delays for people travelling to schools, colleges, and workplaces. Daily wage workers, students, and middle-class residents are among those most affected.

The situation has worsened due to ongoing stormwater drain works in the area. A portion of the road has been blocked, reducing the already limited space available for vehicles. As a result, traffic movement has become even more difficult, with motorists struggling to navigate through the congestion.

Local shop owners say that drivers trying to overtake each other in the narrow stretch are adding to the chaos. This not only slows down traffic further but also increases the chances of minor accidents. Both pedestrians and motorists are finding it challenging to move safely in the area.

Residents have raised concerns about safety, particularly for elderly people, women, and children, who find it difficult to cross the road amid continuous traffic flow and sudden stoppages.

According to traffic officials, the main reason for congestion is that the road passes through a busy market area, making it naturally narrow. In addition, vehicles parked along the road, especially heavy vehicles, further block traffic movement.

To manage the situation, traffic police are deployed during peak hours to regulate vehicle flow and clear obstructions. However, despite these efforts, congestion at the junction continues to remain a major issue for daily commuters.
