Ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, a new voter-friendly initiative has been introduced in Chennai, where polling booths will be colour-coded to simplify the voting process.

This system will be implemented across all 16 assembly constituencies in the city, especially at polling locations with more than ten booths operating within the same premises.

Colour-Coding to Reduce Confusion

District Election Officer J Kumaragurubaran stated that colour-coded pathways and signboards will guide voters directly to their designated booths.

Each booth will be assigned a specific colour, and voters can follow clearly marked routes, helping to reduce confusion and improve crowd flow at busy polling centres.

Polling Infrastructure in Chennai

Total Booths: 4,085
Polling Locations: 1,197
Assembly Constituencies: 16

At several locations, including schools in areas like Purasawalkam, pathways have been painted in colours such as sky blue, pink, and green to guide voters efficiently.

Enhanced Voter Convenience

To ensure smooth polling, authorities have introduced additional arrangements:

- Separate entry and exit points at select polling stations
- Directional maps for easy navigation
- Dedicated facilities for Persons with Disabilities
- Mobile phone storage racks for voters

Some polling locations are expected to handle up to 9,000 voters, making these arrangements crucial for crowd management.
