This unique temple complex consists of two shrines - the hilltop Marundeeswarar Temple and the foothill Kachabeswarar Temple. The presiding deities are Lord Kachabeswarar and Lord Marundeeswarar, with Anjanakshi Amman and Irulneeki Ambal as their consorts.

According to legend, Lord Vishnu, in his tortoise (Kachaba) form, worshipped Lord Shiva here during the churning of the ocean, giving the temple its name. Another legend associates the temple with healing, as Lord Shiva revealed sacred herbs to cure Indra`s illness, earning the name Marundeeswarar, meaning "Lord of Medicine."
