Villivakkam Lake Park Expected to Open by September With Glass Bridge and Snow World

After years of delays and uncertainty, the much-awaited Villivakkam Lake Park project in Chennai is finally nearing completion. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has said the park is likely to open by September 2026, bringing a major new recreation and entertainment space to residents in and around Villivakkam.

The project, spread across the 39-acre Villivakkam Lake in SIDCO Nagar, was first launched in 2018 under the Chennai Smart City Mission. What started as a lake restoration effort has now grown into a large-scale public attraction with several entertainment features planned for families and children.

Work on the project had slowed down over the years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, legal issues, and the removal of encroachments around the lake. Recently, the clearance of encroachments in Annai Sathya Nagar helped speed up the remaining construction work.

One of the biggest attractions at the park will be a 250-metre-long glass-bottom suspension bridge built across the lake. Hanging around 41 feet above the water, the bridge is expected to offer visitors a scenic view of the restored lake and surrounding areas. Officials said the bridge has been safety-certified by IIT Madras and will allow only a limited number of visitors at a time.

The upcoming amusement park is also set to include several family-friendly attractions such as:

- Snow World
- Children’s play areas
- Indoor gaming courts
- Boating rides
- Open-air music theatre
- Mini theatre
- Food courts and leisure spaces

The GCC has partnered with CK Enterprises under a public-private partnership model to develop and maintain the park.

Residents in Villivakkam, Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Avadi, and nearby localities have welcomed the project, saying it could become a popular weekend destination for families. Many believe the park will offer affordable entertainment options closer to home, especially for middle-class residents who usually travel to other parts of the city for similar experiences.

At the same time, some resident welfare groups have raised concerns about maintaining the restored waterbody and ensuring the long-term safety of the amusement facilities. They say regular maintenance and proper environmental care will be important for the project’s success in the years ahead.

If completed on schedule, the Villivakkam Lake Park could become one of Chennai’s newest and most talked-about public attractions by the end of this year.
