The Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 witnessed a strong voter turnout of 85.15% across the state, according to the Election Commission of India. Polling was conducted smoothly from 7 AM to 6 PM across all 234 constituencies, with a total of 4,023 candidates contesting in the elections.

To facilitate voting, over 75,064 polling booths were set up across Tamil Nadu, ensuring accessibility for voters in both urban and rural areas.

In Chennai, voter turnout reached 83.7%, which is higher compared to previous elections in 2016 and 2021 in percentage terms. However, in absolute numbers, the total votes polled were slightly lower than in past elections.

In 2016, out of 39.75 lakh registered voters, 24.33 lakh votes were cast, recording a turnout of 61.2%. In 2021, 24.16 lakh votes were recorded out of 40.04 lakh voters, with a turnout of 60%.

For 2026, following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the total number of voters stood at 28.30 lakh, out of which 23.69 lakh voters cast their votes, resulting in a significantly higher turnout of 83.7%.

The increase in percentage turnout indicates improved voter participation, even as the total voter base saw revisions.
