A major railway infrastructure upgrade is set to transform suburban train connectivity in Tamil Nadu as the Ministry of Railways has approved the long-awaited double railway line project between Chengalpattu Junction railway station and Arakkonam Junction railway station.

The Railway Ministry has given approval for the ₹993 crore double-line railway project aimed at improving train operations and reducing congestion on the busy Chengalpattu–Arakkonam route.

Currently, only a single railway track exists on this section, leading to frequent train delays and operational bottlenecks for suburban and passenger train services. The lack of double-line connectivity often forces trains to wait for crossing clearance at stations including:

- Palur
- Walajabad
- Kanchipuram

68 KM Double Railway Line Planned

According to railway officials, the project involves construction of a second railway track for approximately 68 kilometres between Chengalpattu and Arakkonam.

Southern Railway had earlier proposed converting the existing single line into a double-line corridor at an estimated project cost exceeding ₹1,500 crore. Following public consultation meetings and recommendations to the Railway Board, the project has now received official approval.

Major Benefits Expected

Once the double railway line becomes operational:

- Suburban train congestion is expected to reduce significantly
- Train delays on the route may decrease
- Daily train operations can increase from 13 to nearly 40 services
- Additional passenger and freight trains can be operated
- Better connectivity for Chennai suburban commuters

The project is expected to greatly improve railway connectivity between Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Walajabad, and Arakkonam while supporting future suburban rail expansion in Tamil Nadu.

Railway passengers and daily commuters have welcomed the announcement, as the route currently experiences heavy operational delays due to the single-track system.
