The well-known Sri Subramaniya Swami Temple, located in Kundrathur, is a Murugan temple dedicated to Lord Subramaniya (Sivasubramaniya Swami). Situated atop a small hill, this temple is unique as the deity faces north, an uncommon feature among Murugan temples in Tamil Nadu. The temple is believed to have been constructed during the reign of Kulothunga Chola II and follows the Shivagama tradition.

The sacred temple tree (Thala Virutcham) is Vilwa, and the holy tank (Theertham) is known as Sravana Poigai. Despite Lord Murugan being associated with both Valli and Deivanai, devotees here experience the darshan of the Lord with only one consort at a time, which adds to the temple’s spiritual uniqueness. The temple, estimated to be around 500–1000 years old, is especially famous for its grand Karthigai Deepam festival celebrations.

The temple is also historically significant as it is the birthplace of the revered Tamil poet Sekkizhar, who authored the sacred Periapuranam. His birthplace has been preserved as a temple. His brother Palaravayar is credited with creating a nearby water tank, now known as Palaravayar Kulam.

Located about 16 km from Tambaram and 8 km from Pallavaram, the temple is easily accessible. The nearest railway station is Pallavaram, and the closest airport is Chennai International Airport.
