Chennai Egmore Railway Station Modernization Update: New Parking Complex Ready, Main Entrance to Be Shifted

Posted on: 23/Feb/2026 9:46:35 AM

The historic Chennai Egmore Railway Station, one of the oldest railway terminals in Chennai and a key hub for southern districts, is undergoing a massive redevelopment project. Authorities have confirmed that while the newly constructed modern multi-level parking complex is ready for use, the station’s main entrance will soon be shifted as part of the ongoing renovation.

Major Infrastructure Upgrade Worth ₹820 Crore

Originally launched in 2022 with an allocation of ₹400 crore, the redevelopment cost was later revised to ₹740 crore and has now increased to ₹820 crore. The project aims to modernize the station while preserving its iconic Indo-Saracenic architectural style under archaeological guidelines.

Due to heritage protection measures, the existing two historic entrance gates will not be demolished. Instead, a new main entrance will be constructed opposite the Egmore Archives building.

Massive New Parking Facility

A grand multi-level vehicle parking complex has been constructed at a cost of over ₹5 crore across 21,510 square meters. The building includes:

- Ground floor & 5th floor – Commercial spaces

- 2nd, 3rd & 4th floors – Parking levels

- Capacity for 4,500 two-wheelers and over 500 cars

The facility is expected to become operational by April, significantly easing parking congestion around the station.

Improved Connectivity & Passenger Facilities

A new 70-meter-wide foot overbridge will connect the main entrance to the Poonamallee High Road metro area, providing seamless access to all platforms. Currently, the station handles around:

- 1.5 lakh passengers daily

- 46 express trains to southern and northern states

- 80 suburban EMU services operating 205 trips daily

Work Progress & Challenges

Around 700 workers are engaged day and night to complete the project by 2027. However, construction officials have reported delays due to vehicle penalties imposed over soil dumping issues near Poonamallee High Road.

Meanwhile, railway authorities have arranged special bus services to minimize passenger inconvenience during the renovation.

The Egmore Railway Station redevelopment project is set to transform the iconic terminal into a modern transport hub with enhanced passenger amenities, better traffic management, and world-class infrastructure, while retaining its historic charm.
