In view of the Pongal holiday rush, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has introduced new parking arrangements at Marina Beach to manage the massive influx of visitors and reduce traffic congestion.
As lakhs of people are expected to visit Marina Beach during the festive holidays, the Corporation has allocated a 10,000 square metre area near Anna Memorial Park for parking two-wheelers and cars. The move aims to improve accessibility to the beach, as roadside parking along the seafront is limited.
Parking Facilities Near Anna Memorial Park
According to GCC officials, parking facilities have been temporarily arranged at the playground located behind Anna Memorial Park. The designated area can accommodate:
- 50 cars
- 50 vans
- 50 tourist buses
Additionally, two-wheelers will be allowed to park along the Marina service road, officials said.
Temporary Arrangement Due to Ownership Issues
Officials clarified that the playground initially prepared for parking belongs to the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT). Due to ownership constraints, the plan was briefly halted. However, considering the anticipated holiday crowd, the Corporation has decided to temporarily utilise the ground for parking.
Authorities also stated that if SDAT begins construction activities at the site, the parking arrangement will be withdrawn immediately.
Traffic Advisory
Visitors are advised to:
Follow traffic police instructions
Use designated parking zones only
Avoid roadside parking to prevent congestion
The GCC has urged the public to cooperate to ensure smooth traffic flow and a safe holiday experience at Marina Beach.
