Technical Glitch at Tambaram Signal Control Centre Disrupts Chennai Suburban Train Services
A technical fault at the main signal control centre in Tambaram caused significant disruption to Chennai`s suburban railway network, affecting thousands of commuters during the busy morning hours.
The issue occurred at the signal control facility inside Tambaram railway station, preventing railway authorities from operating signals normally. As a result, several suburban electric trains and long-distance express trains were delayed or halted at multiple locations along the Chennai–Chengalpattu corridor.
Trains travelling towards Tambaram from Chengalpattu were stopped at stations including Perungalathur, Vandalur, and Guduvanchery, while services heading towards Chennai Beach also experienced delays. The disruption created confusion among passengers, especially office-goers, students, and daily commuters who depend on suburban train services for their regular travel.
Many passengers complained that there were no timely announcements regarding the reason for the delay, forcing them to wait for extended periods without clear information. Some commuters reportedly left the trains and sought alternative transportation options to reach their destinations.
The technical problem was rectified after more than an hour, following which train services gradually resumed normal operations. However, the incident led to severe inconvenience and sparked criticism from passengers regarding communication and maintenance practices.
Regular train users have urged railway authorities to strengthen infrastructure maintenance and improve real-time passenger information systems to prevent similar disruptions in the future. They also emphasized the importance of timely announcements during service interruptions so that commuters can make informed travel decisions.
The incident once again highlights the critical role of Tambaram as a major railway hub in Chennai`s suburban transport network and the need for reliable signal systems to ensure smooth rail operations.
