An announcement released by the Chennai District Collector lists the food safety checks to be followed if you are buying sweets and savouries from different sweet shops/hotels.
  • Avoid buying very colourful looking sweets as they are made with the addition of Artificial Colouring Agents.
  • When buying a box of assorted sweets, ensure that milk sweets are not packed together with sweets made of other ingredients. The reason is that milk sweets have a different expiry date as compared with other sweets. So, check the expiry date while buying.
  • If flies and other insects are seen around the displayed sweet items, please thoroughly avoid buying the same.
  • If the sweet items emanate an unpleasant smell, avoid buying them.
  • Obtain a proper receipt after buying these items from the various food shops.
  • Please also confirm that the service staff is wearing clean dresses, gloves with the nails trimmed and that they are handling the different food items with gloves.
  • Confirm that the seller has displayed the details of the cooking oil/ghee used for making the items in the sales centre.
  • Ensure that the items bought are given properly packed with the Food Grade container packing material.
  • Check on the sweet packing box whether the ingredients used in different items packed inside are displayed on the cover.
  • Ensure that the packing contains the details of the licence issued by the Food Safety Department and the registration.
  • Also confirm that the complete address of the manufacturer is printed on the pack. Also, confirm whether expiry date and the Customer Care Number are printed.
  • When buying a single item of sweet/savoury in a packing, ensure that the date of manufacture and date of expiry are printed.
  • In case anything wrong is observed, get in touch with the WhatsApp number of the Food Safety Department 94440442322 and make your complaint.
