After nearly 18 years of waiting, the long-delayed Velachery–St Thomas Mount MRTS extension in Chennai has officially begun operations today. The extension connects Velachery with St Thomas Mount (Parangimalai), improving rail connectivity for residents in South Chennai suburbs.

Earlier, a trial run was conducted on March 5 in the presence of the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). After reviewing safety features and making necessary technical modifications, the railway safety authority granted approval for the service to start.

The project, built at a cost of around ₹734 crore, includes a 4.5 km elevated rail corridor and the construction of three new stations along the route. However, trains will not stop at Adambakkam station initially.

With this extension, Southern Railway’s Chennai division has expanded the MRTS service from Velachery to St Thomas Mount, creating better connectivity between the southern suburbs and the central parts of the city.

The new line is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters from areas such as Velachery, Madipakkam, Adambakkam, and surrounding neighbourhoods, providing faster and more convenient travel to different parts of Chennai.
