On Thursday, 23rd October, health minister Mr. M. Subramanian grabbed many eyeballs. He spoke about how for Rs 1500 cr restoration project of the stretch of Adyar River between Thiru VI Ka Bridge and Saidapet a tender has been floated.
It must be taken into note that the health minister was viewing the ongoing works to clear the sand deposits in Adyar river mouth. Information gathered is that the restoration project would involve river banks strengthening work plus riverfront development works etc. To construct 1701 tenements in Nagi Reddy Thottam, work would commence soon to resettle the residents of areas like Jothiammal Nagar etc. To minimize the risk of floods in the areas near the river bank, steps are being taken now. To dredge the Adyar river mouth till the year end, work is going on now. This would help in the draining of a minimum of 40000 cubic feet per second of flood water.
In Chennai yesterday, the MWD pumped and treated an additional load of about 825.47 million litres of sewage compared to the daily load of 650 to 690 mld. As many as 91 sewer lorries were hired by the MWD during the heavy rainfall days to clear the water logging and sewage.
