Chennai Corporation Removes 16 Unauthorized Hoardings, Collects ₹2.10 Lakh in Fines

The Greater Chennai Corporation has removed 16 unauthorized advertisement hoardings across the city and collected fines totaling ₹2.10 lakh as part of its ongoing enforcement drive against illegal outdoor advertisements.

Under the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Rules, 2023, individuals and businesses must obtain approval before installing advertisement hoardings within Chennai city limits. The licensing process is available online through the Chennai Corporation`s portal and applications are reviewed by a single-window committee before permission is granted.

Corporation officials stated that unauthorized hoardings attract a penalty of ₹25,000, while repeated violations can result in fines of up to ₹1 lakh. During inspections conducted on June 19 and June 20, authorities identified and removed 16 hoardings that had been installed without the required permissions. A total fine of ₹2.10 lakh was imposed on the violators.

The civic body has also warned that the cost incurred for removing illegal hoardings will be recovered from those responsible for erecting them. Officials said the special enforcement drive will continue across Chennai to ensure compliance with advertising regulations and maintain public safety.

Currently, 967 licensed advertisement hoardings have been approved within Chennai. Residents can report unauthorized hoardings or illegal advertising structures by contacting the Chennai Corporation helpline at 1913.
