The long-awaited extension of the Chennai MRTS connecting Velachery to St Thomas Mount has finally been opened, offering improved rail connectivity in Chennai. However, residents in areas such as Puzhuthivakkam and Adambakkam have raised concerns over poor last-mile connectivity, particularly the lack of adequate bus services.

Connectivity Boost with New MRTS Link

The new MRTS stretch enhances connectivity between southern suburbs and key transit hubs. St Thomas Mount has now become a major interchange point, linking MRTS with suburban rail and metro services, making commuting easier for thousands of daily passengers.

Residents Flag Last-Mile Transport Issues

Despite the improved rail network, commuters say reaching MRTS stations remains a challenge. Key concerns include:

- Limited MTC bus services near MRTS stations

- Poor connectivity from interior residential areas

- Lack of transport options during early morning and late-night hours

Due to these gaps, many residents still rely on autos and private vehicles, increasing travel costs and reducing the benefits of the MRTS expansion.

Adambakkam Station Yet to Open Fully

Although stations have been developed along the route, Adambakkam MRTS station is not fully operational, with trains currently not halting there. This has affected accessibility for residents in nearby areas, delaying the full benefits of the project.

Need for Better Infrastructure and Services

Commuters have also highlighted the need for improved facilities, including:

- Better feeder bus connectivity

- Improved station access and signage

- Basic amenities like lifts, escalators, and drinking water

A Major Project, But More Work Needed

The MRTS extension marks a significant milestone in Chennai’s urban transport development. However, experts believe that improving last-mile connectivity and completing pending infrastructure work will be crucial to ensure maximum usage and commuter satisfaction.
