Tamil Nadu Government Schools Report 18,107 Teacher Vacancies Across the State

Government schools across Tamil Nadu are facing a significant shortage of teachers, with official data revealing that 18,107 teaching positions remain vacant. The vacancies have raised concerns among educationists and parents about their impact on the quality of education in government schools.

According to the latest figures available as of June 11, a total of 1,14,248 teaching posts have been sanctioned in Tamil Nadu government schools. However, only 96,141 positions have been filled, leaving more than 18,000 vacancies across various categories.

Graduate Teacher posts account for the highest number of vacancies, with 7,252 positions remaining unfilled. This is followed by 2,833 Post Graduate Teacher vacancies. In addition, 1,214 Headmaster positions are also vacant, affecting school administration and academic leadership. Tiruvannamalai district has reported one of the highest numbers of vacant teaching posts.

Education experts have warned that teacher shortages can affect students` learning outcomes, particularly in subject-specific teaching. In many schools, existing teachers are required to handle multiple subjects and additional responsibilities, increasing workload and impacting classroom effectiveness.

Parents and teacher associations have urged the Tamil Nadu School Education Department to fill the vacant posts at the earliest to ensure quality education and improve learning standards in government schools across the state.
