The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is moving forward with its proposed Rope Car project along Chennai`s Marina Beach, with the project likely to be taken up before the end of 2026. The initiative was announced in the GCC Budget 2026-27 and aims to enhance tourism infrastructure in the city.

The proposed ropeway will span about 5 kilometres from the Labour Statue to the Lighthouse, offering visitors a unique aerial view of the Marina coastline. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been completed and is currently under technical and financial evaluation.

According to GCC officials, the project is estimated to cost over ₹100 crore and is planned under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The Corporation is also examining alternative alignments to improve feasibility and reduce implementation challenges.

Before construction begins, all required statutory approvals, including Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearances, will be obtained. The project is expected to boost tourism, attract more visitors to Marina Beach, and add a new recreational attraction to Chennai`s coastline.
