Rain Relief Likely During Agni Natchathiram Heat in Tamil Nadu; Early Monsoon Expected

As temperatures continue to rise across Tamil Nadu, the upcoming Agni Natchathiram (Kathiri heat) period from May 4 to May 28, 2026, is expected to bring a mix of intense heat and intermittent rain spells.

According to weather blogger Hemachander R, this year’s peak summer phase may not be entirely dry. While Agni Natchathiram is traditionally known for scorching temperatures, convection-driven thunderstorms could provide temporary relief in several parts of the state.

These rain spells are triggered by intense surface heating, which causes warm air to rise and form storm clouds. As a result, short-duration showers and thunderstorms are likely during the Kathiri period. Although these rains may not completely reduce the heat, they are expected to prevent extreme temperature spikes.

The southwest monsoon is also expected to arrive earlier than usual this year. Typically setting in around June 1, the monsoon may reach India between May 23 and May 25. However, despite the early onset, rainfall across southern states is likely to remain below normal.

States such as Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu may receive less than their average seasonal rainfall. In Tamil Nadu, the seasonal average stands at around 33 cm, and current predictions suggest a possible shortfall.

Experts also warn that the impact of a strong El Niño weather pattern could prolong heat conditions until August. This may result in higher temperatures, reduced rainfall, and uneven weather patterns across the region.

Overall, Tamil Nadu is expected to experience a combination of intense summer heat, brief rain relief during Agni Natchathiram, and a weaker-than-normal monsoon season in 2026.
