Chennai Metro Phase 2 Update: Poonamallee - Vadapalani Services to Start Soon

Posted on: 05/Jan/2026 9:33:08 AM

The much-anticipated Poonamallee-Vadapalani Metro corridor under Chennai Metro Rail Phase 2 is expected to become operational next month, according to officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). The 15.8 km stretch is part of Corridor 4 (Lighthouse–Poonamallee) and will significantly improve public transport connectivity in west Chennai.

Currently, Chennai Metro operates Phase 1 services across two corridors. Phase 2, being implemented at a cost of ₹63,246 crore, will cover 116.1 km when fully completed, linking major residential, commercial, and IT hubs across the city.

Trial Runs and Safety Inspections

CMRL has completed the first round of safety inspections, while the final inspection of stations is scheduled for the last week of January. Trial runs are being extended up to Vadapalani, and services will commence after statutory approvals from the safety commissioner.

Seamless Connectivity at Vadapalani

At Vadapalani, commuters will benefit from a direct interchange with Phase 1 Metro services through a dedicated skywalk, ensuring smooth transfers without exiting the paid area. This integration is expected to attract more daily commuters to the Metro network.

Reduced Travel Time and Traffic Congestion

Once operational, the Poonamallee–Vadapalani Metro line will reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion on arterial roads, and offer a reliable alternative to road transport for thousands of daily commuters.
