Commercial LPG cylinder prices in Chennai have seen a sharp increase at the beginning of the month, driven by global crude oil price fluctuations and the Indian Rupee’s performance against the US Dollar.

According to the latest update, the price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder has increased by ₹990, rising from ₹2,246.50 to ₹3,237. This significant hike is expected to impact restaurants, hotels, and small businesses that rely heavily on commercial gas usage.

In addition, the 5 kg small LPG cylinder price has also gone up by ₹261 in a single day, adding further financial pressure on small vendors and roadside eateries.

This latest revision continues a trend of frequent price hikes. Commercial LPG cylinder prices were increased on March 1, again on March 7, and further revised on April 1. The latest increase at the start of the new month has raised concerns among business owners.

However, there is some relief for households as the domestic LPG cylinder (14.2 kg) price remains unchanged at ₹928.50.

The primary reasons behind the price surge include rising global crude oil prices, depreciation of the Indian Rupee, and supply disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions such as the US–Iran conflict. These factors have led to a shortage in LPG supply, pushing prices higher.

The continuous increase in commercial LPG prices is likely to affect the food industry significantly. Many hotels and small eateries are already facing operational challenges due to supply shortages, and some have been forced to temporarily shut down. The rising cost of cooking gas may also result in increased food prices, indirectly affecting the general public.
