CM M.K. Stalin Inaugurates Tholkappia Poonga in Chennai
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday inaugurated the Tholkappia Poonga in Raja Annamalaipuram, Chennai, opening it for public use after extensive renovation.
The park’s renovation, costing Rs. 42.45 crore, includes modern facilities such as a new entrance gate, observation tower, children’s play area, and visitor pavilion. Spanning 58 acres, the park was created by revitalizing the Adyar backwaters.
Originally laid by former Chief Minister Kalaignar Karunanidhi in 2008 and opened to the public in 2011, the park had suffered from inadequate maintenance. A redevelopment plan was prepared by the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust in 2021 to restore it.
With its revival, Tholkappia Poonga now offers Chennaiites a green retreat in the heart of the city.
