In a major inconvenience to residents, the demolition of a key bridge in Vyasarpadi, Chennai, has severely disrupted daily connectivity. The bridge located at Shastri Nagar along Anna Salai was removed as part of the ongoing Captain Cotton Canal improvement project undertaken by the Greater Chennai Corporation.

The infrastructure upgrade aims to strengthen flood management by increasing the height of the canal bunds. However, the demolition has cut off direct access to Erukkancheri High Road, forcing commuters to take longer alternative routes.

Residents in the locality have expressed frustration over the sudden disruption. Many are now forced to park their vehicles near the demolished bridge and walk across a temporary pathway to reach their homes and nearby shops. Students and office-goers are among the worst affected, facing delays and difficulties in their daily commute.

Although authorities have provided a temporary walkway, locals complain that it is uneven and poorly maintained. The lack of proper lighting and safety barricades has raised serious concerns, especially during night hours.

Shop owners in the area have also reported a decline in business, as reduced accessibility has led to lower customer footfall. Additionally, stagnant water and ongoing construction have resulted in foul smell and increased mosquito problems in the surrounding areas.

Officials stated that the delay in reconstruction is due to the presence of underground Metro Water pipelines and drainage lines discovered during excavation. The project, estimated at ₹2.9 crore and covering 850 meters of canal stretch, is said to be around 70% complete.

Authorities have assured that the bridge reconstruction work will be completed within the next 15 days, which is expected to restore normal connectivity for residents.
