Chennai Corporation to Launch Smart Baggage Lockers at 10 Public Locations
The Greater Chennai Corporation is set to enhance public convenience by installing smart baggage locker facilities at 10 key locations across the city.
The initiative is aimed at helping residents, tourists, and daily visitors securely store their belongings while visiting crowded public areas.
Smart Lockers to Be Installed at Key Chennai Landmarks
In the first phase, the locker units will be introduced at high-footfall areas including:
- Victoria Public Hall
- Marina Beach
- Major public parks
- Other prominent gathering spots in Chennai
The project is being implemented in collaboration with a private company.
Features of the Chennai Smart Locker System
The smart locker unit installed at Victoria Public Hall includes:
- 8-foot tall, 4-foot wide structure
- 16 secure locker compartments
- Digital locking mechanism
- QR code-based payment system
- Dual CCTV cameras for enhanced security
Users can scan a QR code using their mobile phones to make payments, lock, and unlock compartments digitally. A nominal hourly fee will be charged for storing items.
Pilot Phase with Expansion Plans
The smart locker facility is being introduced on a trial basis. Based on public feedback and usage, the system will be expanded to additional key locations across Chennai.
