Tamil Nadu May Face Power Shortage from May as Summer Demand Surges
Rising summer temperatures are expected to push electricity demand sharply in Tamil Nadu, leading to a possible power shortage from May, according to the Ministry of Power.
With temperatures crossing 100°F in several districts, the use of air conditioners and cooling appliances has increased significantly, driving up power consumption across homes and commercial spaces.
Power Demand Increasing Across South India
The central data shows a steady rise in electricity demand across southern states including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry.
- Total demand in southern states has increased from 69,934 MW to 73,805 MW
- Tamil Nadu’s demand has risen from 19,679 MW to 19,822 MW
- The state currently records the highest electricity demand in the region
Record Peak Demand in Tamil Nadu
The average daily power requirement in Tamil Nadu is around 16,000 MW, but during peak summer especially the Agni Nakshatram period demand rises sharply. Recently, the state recorded a new peak of 21,060 MW, indicating growing pressure on the power supply system.

Officials have stated that measures are being taken to handle the expected shortfall:
