First ever integrated Bus Rapid Transit or BRT system flyover to be constructed on the Chennai- Trichy GST Road!!
No more heavy traffic congestion along the important Chennai- Trichy NH or GST Road in the future!!
The GST or Grand Southern Trunk Road in Chennai is a very busy road with lots of IT companies, manufacturing companies and residential complexes etc. This is a very important road for those who go from Chennai to southern districts like Madurai, Trichy, Thanjavur etc. It is a known fact that during the festival seasons many vehicles get stuck up in the traffic jams for several hours in the junctions like Vayalur, Chengalpet, Oorapakkam and Mamallapuram etc.
The NHAI or National Highways Authority of India has come up with a flyover project to ease traffic congestion along Chennai-Trichy highways. This would be the first ever integrated flyover in Tamil Nadu with BRT or Bus Rapid Transit facility. An amount of Rs 3400 cr would be spent on this BRT flyover construction and the flyover would stretch from Urapakkam to Mahindra World City (Chettipunniyam). It must be noted that after a detailed study the width of the flyover has been widened from the initial 25m to 29m now. On both the sides of the flyover, additional lanes would also be constructed.
Dual purpose additional lanes:
It is learnt that the additional lanes have been designed with dual purpose. That is they would help in smooth traffic management and also act as dedicated lanes for BRT. At every 2kms, lifts would be installed to help the commuters and this was confirmed by NHAI.
It is superb to note that the flyover that would be constructed on the Chennai- Trichy NH would reduce accidents at 14 accident prone spots that have been identified. The local traffic and expressway traffic would be segregated and heavy traffic congestion especially during the festival season would be avoided
