State Bank of Indias Arundhati Bhattacharya gets one-year extension as chairman

The Central Government has given State Bank of India`s Arundhati Bhattacharya a one-year extension as chairman. Bhattacharya is the first woman to lead the two-century old SBI bank. The extension will help her complete the mega merger of the five associate banks State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur, State Bank of Travancore, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Mysore and State Bank of Hyderabad, apart from Bharatiya Mahila Bank.
 
The merger would make SBI the 45th largest bank in the world with an asset of over Rs 37 trillion with over 500 million customers and 22,500 branches and 58,000 ATMs.
 
Bhattacharya was first appointed as the head of SBI for a three-year term in October 7, 2013 and was scheduled to retire on October 6 this year. At this juncture the government granted one year extension to Arundhati Bhattacharya as chairman of State Bank of India,
