MTC to Introduce Automated Ticketing on Buses by March, Plans for 1,500 Electric Buses by June 2025

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in Chennai is gearing up to launch an automated ticketing system on buses by March, with the entire fleet expected to have a Passenger Information System (PIS) by June 2025. Additionally, the MTC has outlined plans to procure 1,500 electric buses, funded by the World Bank and KfW. Tenders for 500 e-buses with World Bank funding and 300 with KfW funds have already been floated. The city`s transport system is set to witness substantial growth, with a total of 5,000 buses anticipated. The `Ease of Moving Index Chennai City Profile` study by OMI Foundation highlighted the city`s sustainable mobility achievements, leading to a memorandum of understanding signed with IIT-M for further exploration of opportunities in sustainable mobility.
