Northeast Monsoon Begins to Show Signs Across Tamil Nadu; Weatherman Advises People to Keep Umbrellas Ready

Rainfall activity has increased across several parts of Tamil Nadu, from Chennai to Kanyakumari, with rain-bearing clouds gathering along the coast and in the interior districts. Popular weather forecaster Pradeep John, widely known as the ‘Tamil Nadu Weatherman’, has advised people to keep their umbrellas ready as the Northeast Monsoon gets underway.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Pradeep John observed that impressive cloud formations were visible from Chennai to Thoothukudi. He noted that the weather could alternate between sudden showers and sunshine, with rainfall potentially more frequent during the early morning and night hours.

Rain Expected Across Coastal and Interior Districts

Several southern districts, the Western Ghats region, and the coastal and Delta districts have experienced rainfall over the past week. Thunderstorms and lightning were also reported in various parts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.

Chennai, which had experienced a relatively dry spell for about a week, received rainfall in several areas on Wednesday.

According to the weather observations shared by Pradeep John, rainfall is not expected to remain confined to coastal areas, with interior districts also likely to receive showers.

Heavy Rain Possibility Along the Coast

Weather forecaster Hemachandar, popularly known as the ‘Delta Weatherman’, has indicated the possibility of heavy rainfall, particularly in the northern coastal districts.

Very heavy rainfall is possible in coastal areas stretching from Chennai towards Kanyakumari, while moderate showers may occur in the Delta and interior districts.

Rainfall activity is expected to continue over the coming days, although its intensity may vary from one location to another.

Northeast Monsoon: What to Expect

The Northeast Monsoon is expected to become active over Tamil Nadu and neighbouring regions around October 15, according to the forecasts cited in the report. Weather observers have also pointed to changing atmospheric conditions and the presence of rain-bearing clouds as signs of increasing monsoon activity.

The coming weeks could bring several spells of rainfall across the state. However, the timing, intensity and distribution of rain will depend on evolving weather conditions.

Residents are advised to carry umbrellas, follow official weather alerts and take precautions during thunderstorms and lightning.
