Damaged ECR Footpath in Tiruvanmiyur Puts Pedestrians at Risk

The damaged and uneven footpath near the bus stop on East Coast Road (ECR) in Tiruvanmiyur has become a safety concern for pedestrians, including school students and senior citizens. Loose tiles and uneven surfaces increase the risk of trips and falls, forcing people to walk cautiously or use the road.

Residents said several sections of the footpath have remained damaged for nearly four years. During rainy weather, loose tiles and slippery surfaces make walking more difficult, particularly at night when the damaged portions are harder to see.

Roadside Parking and Poor Maintenance Add to the Problem

Renovation work at the Tiruvanmiyur bus terminus is currently underway, resulting in buses being parked along the roadside. Some sections near the footpath have become less visible, and the area has also been affected by unpleasant odours caused by people urinating there.

Shopkeepers and residents said the stretch is used by many commuters every day. Due to the uneven footpath, some pedestrians are forced to walk on the road alongside fast-moving vehicles, increasing the risk of accidents.

Repair Work Awaits Approval

A Highways Department official said a proposal to repair the footpath had already been submitted. Work will begin after approval is received, and officials will also examine possible temporary repairs.

The official added that digging for electricity and telecommunications cables without proper restoration has contributed to the damage. Some private companies reportedly carry out cable-laying work without obtaining the required permission, leaving footpaths in poor condition.

Residents have called for timely repairs and better maintenance to improve pedestrian safety along ECR in Tiruvanmiyur.
