Two New Lifts Open at Tambaram Railway Station in Chennai

Two new lifts have been opened for passenger use at Tambaram Railway Station in Chennai, improving accessibility for commuters. The lifts connecting Platforms 1 and 2, and Platforms 3 and 4, were inaugurated on Friday by Southern Railway.

According to the Chennai Division of Southern Railway, the lifts are connected to the new 8-metre-wide foot-overbridge (FOB). They will help senior citizens, persons with disabilities and passengers carrying heavy luggage move between platforms more easily.

Tambaram Railway Station Upgrade Works

The railway authorities are expediting the remaining infrastructure works, including the installation of 10 new escalators connecting to the foot-overbridge. These works are targeted for completion by December 2026.

As the new foot-overbridge is not yet fully operational, Southern Railway has made temporary arrangements, including placing wheelchairs at various locations within the station to assist senior citizens and passengers with disabilities.

The lift and escalator installations form part of the ongoing infrastructure improvements at Tambaram Railway Station to accommodate increasing passenger traffic.

However, commuters have raised concerns about incomplete circulating areas and inadequate access from the street to the new foot-overbridge. Completing these supporting facilities is essential to ensure passengers can fully benefit from the station`s infrastructure improvements.
