Ashtalakshmi Temple, Chennai: History, Architecture and Significance

History

Ashtalakshmi Temple is a prominent Hindu temple located near Elliot’s Beach in Chennai. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and her eight principal forms, collectively known as Ashtalakshmi. These eight forms are traditionally associated with different aspects of prosperity and well-being, including wealth, food, knowledge, courage, success and offspring.

The temple was constructed following the wishes of Sri Chandrashekarendra Saraswati Swamigal of Kanchi Mutt. Sri Mukkur Srinivasa Varadhachariar played an important role in bringing the project to completion. The foundation stone was laid in January 1974 with public participation.

The temple was consecrated on 5 April 1976 in the presence of the 44th Guru of Ahobila Mutt, Vedhantha Dhesika Yatheendhra Mahadhesikan Swami.

Architecture and Special Features

The temple measures approximately 65 feet in length and 45 feet in breadth and was designed based on the architectural style of the Sundara Varadaraja Perumal Temple at Uthiramerur.

One of the most distinctive features of the Ashtalakshmi Temple is its multi-level design. The eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped across four levels and nine separate sanctums. The arrangement allows devotees to visit the different shrines by following a designated path without stepping over any of the sanctums.

Worship traditionally begins at the second level, where Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu are enshrined. From there, devotees proceed upstairs to the third level, which houses the shrines of Santhanalakshmi, Vijayalakshmi, Vidyalakshmi and Gajalakshmi.

The fourth level contains the shrine of Dhanalakshmi, while the first level has the shrines of Aadilakshmi, Dhaanyalakshmi and Dhairyalakshmi.

In addition to the Ashtalakshmi shrines, the temple also has deities associated with Lord Vishnu’s Dashavatara, Guruvayoorappan, Lord Ganesha, Lord Dhanvanthari and Lord Anjaneyar.

Significance

The Ashtalakshmi Temple is dedicated to the worship of the eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi, with each form representing a different aspect of prosperity and well-being. The unique vertical arrangement of the sanctums is one of the temple’s notable architectural features and provides devotees with a distinctive worship experience.

Located close to the seashore near Elliot’s Beach, the temple is also a well-known spiritual landmark in Chennai.
