Chennai Airport Terminal 5 Project: Land Acquisition Work Begins

The Tamil Nadu government has begun preliminary work on the Chennai airport expansion project by appointing a Special District Revenue Officer (DRO) to oversee the land acquisition process.

Special DRO Appointed for Chennai Airport Expansion

D Ambayiranathan has been appointed as the Special DRO for the Chennai airport expansion project. He was previously serving as a Land Acquisition Officer in the Highways Department in Villupuram.

According to official sources, a separate office is likely to be established in Tambaram or Pallavaram to coordinate the land acquisition activities and oversee the expansion-related work.

Chennai Airport Terminal 5 Planned

As part of the Chennai airport expansion, the Tamil Nadu government has announced plans to develop a new Terminal 5 on the north-western side of Chennai Airport in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

The proposed expansion will also include an approach road and flyover to improve connectivity to the airport and support the movement of passengers and vehicles.

Land Acquisition Process Begins

Following the government`s announcement, the State has initiated steps towards land acquisition for Chennai Airport expansion. The appointment of a dedicated Special DRO is expected to facilitate the administrative process and coordinate the acquisition activities.

The expansion plans are aimed at strengthening the existing Chennai Airport infrastructure and supporting the city`s growing air travel requirements.

Chennai Second Airport Plans

The Tamil Nadu government has also announced that the proposed Parandur airport project will not proceed at the proposed site. Instead, alternative locations are being considered for a new second airport for Chennai.

At the same time, the government is moving forward with the expansion of the existing Chennai Airport, including the proposed Terminal 5.

Earlier Attempts for a Second Chennai Airport

Efforts to develop a second airport for Chennai have been under consideration for several years. Sriperumbudur, located around 50 km from Chennai, was examined as a potential site after the DMK came to power in 2006.

The proposal did not progress at that time. After the AIADMK came to power in 2011, discussions about a second airport resumed, but the project did not make significant progress.

The latest Chennai airport expansion initiative marks the beginning of the land acquisition process for the proposed infrastructure improvements, while the search for an alternative site for Chennai`s second airport continues.s.
