OMR Traffic Diversions Cause Congestion in Chennai; Commuters Face Delays

The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) introduced temporary traffic changes on Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR) on Wednesday, September 23, with the aim of easing congestion and regulating vehicular movement. However, the changes resulted in increased traffic congestion across parts of the IT corridor.

OMR is already known for slow-moving traffic during peak hours, but several commuters reported that Wednesday was particularly difficult for motorists, with vehicles facing longer delays following the implementation of the new traffic arrangements.

Three U-Turns Closed on OMR

As part of the traffic management measures, the GCTP prohibited three U-turns along OMR:

U-turn near Geetham Restaurant

U-turn near BSR Mall

U-turn near World Trade Centre

The closures were intended to regulate vehicle movement and reduce traffic conflicts along the busy stretch.

Commuters Caught Off Guard

The traffic changes were announced by the GCTP on its social media platforms only on Tuesday night, a day before implementation. The short notice reportedly left many regular OMR commuters unprepared for the changes.

With motorists unable to use the familiar U-turn points, vehicles had to take alternative routes or travel farther before making a turn. This contributed to delays and congestion at several locations along the corridor.

Rajiv Gandhi Salai is one of Chennai`s major IT and commercial corridors, connecting several residential areas, business parks and technology companies. Managing traffic efficiently on OMR is therefore important for thousands of daily commuters.
