Tambaram is an important division in the south
west of Chennai city. The place is about 25 kilometres from the city
center and connected by major roadways and railways. The Great Southern
Trunk Road and Southern Railways provide access into the region. A
number of small townships have been developed along these road and rail
links. Tambaram as a division occupies great territorial lands in the
south of the city. The rail and road links that come from the city
proceed further south and into the region of Chengalpattu, a district of
Tamil Nadu. The region is further connected to the south east regions
and the adjoining district of Mammalapuram by Velacheri Road. The place
is also known for providing numerous educational facilities.
Tambaram is spread over a good land area (precise figures not
available). The major road and railway head that comes from the Chennai
city bisects the region into Tambaram East and Tambaram West. The entire
region forms an important trade and commercial centre in the South
Chennai. Chrompet and Pallavaram are two renowned district suburbs in
the Tambaram division.
