According to Skymet Weather, these rains can be attributed to a trough running along the East Coast. It has increased the level of moisture in the atmosphere over the city. Due to this, convective clouds had formed leading to light rainfall over Chennai.

Chennai rain update for June 19th to 20th early morning
Models have never been so consistent about tonight. For last 10 days if i can remember, they are showing confirmed rains. Lets hope the late blooming storms do their trick of if there is some heat.
