Menopause typically occurs in women above the age of 50 years, due to hormonal changes in the body. Menopausal and post menopausal women are prone to weight gain, and the subsequent inability to lose the weight. The fat accumulation can lead to more serious issues such as heart diseases, high cholesterol, breast cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes.

The metabolism in women decreases after menopause. It is important to control the portions of your food to keep the weight in check. It is advised that the diet must be a combination of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. This combination keeps the person full, thus reducing cravings. Diet must consist of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low fat dairy products. Processed foods and refined sugars must be avoided completely. Remember to eat your food slowly and avoid fad diets!

Daily exercise is a must. Aerobic exercises such as walking, brisk walking, swimming and bicycling for 20 minutes every day must become a routine. Don`t forget to drink lost of water to aid the metabolism process.
