Survey on proper use of auto meters

Posted on: 06/Feb/2014 5:37:00 PM
The state transport authority surveyed the auto rickshaws in the city and found that almost 80% of autos have calibrated meters. However, they charge more than the rate scale fixed by the government.

Enquiring the people, they stated that compared to previous years, autos are now found with functioning meters, but the drivers still charge high. 67% of the totally surveyed population complained about the high rates charged.

“I got into an auto and traveled about 1.3 km. When I got down, the driver demanded Rs 50 and I had to pay it entirely, because I did not have any other choice!”, says a Nanganallur resident.According to a resident from Sowcarpet, auto drivers still refuse to use meters and even now, the minimum fare to travel between places is Rs 100.

“The survey will be an ongoing process – it will be done monthly once. It will help us to understand the scenario prevailing in the city and about how far auto drivers stick-on to government norms”, said one of the officials from transport department.
