Women medical officers trained in colposcopy and cryotherapy procedures
Women medical officers are being trained in colposcopy and cryotherapy procedures at the Institute of Social Obstetrics and Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital (KGH) for Women and Children in a bid to enable early diagnosis of cervical cancer among women in rural areas.

The hospital, which is a regional training centre in colposcopy and cervical pathology, has already been training medical and paramedical personnel in these procedures. The training focuses on colposcopy, a diagnostic procedure, and cryotherapy, a pre-invasive treatment procedure.

A digital colposcope, a device consisting of a high-power field microscope, is used to detect cervical cancer by identifying abnormal cells. It provides a magnified view of the cervix.

Cryotherapy is a pre-invasive out-patient procedure to destroy identified malignant tissues in the pre-cancerous stage.
