Daily Supply of 20 million liters of drinking water by trucks to Chennai

In the recent seminar on the monsoon research conducted on Wednesday at the Chennai Meteorological Centre, Chennai Water Board Managing Director, Mr. Chandramohan informed:

The water levels in Poondi, Chembarambakka, Puzhal, and Cholavaram reservoirs are pretty low.  

To augment this and meet 60% of the demand, 180 million liters per day from Veeranam lake and another 180 million liters per day from the sea-water desalination plants at Minjur are supplied to Chennai.

The city’s major reservoirs position - Veeranam 0,720 TMC, Mettur dam 29,124 TMC, Kandaleru Dam 33,060 tmc

In addition, tube-wells have been sunk in Tiruvallur District, and Thamaraippakkam, Minjur, and Panchatti to bring 20 million liters of water daily to Chennai by trucks.Plans to hire agricultural wells, dug wells are under way to get 40 million litres per day. 10 Deep-tube-wells are being sunk at Neyveli.

On an average, Chennai is expected to receive 92cm rainfall from the 2 monsoons. However, this year Chennai received only 74cm. Even though many depressions formed in the last few months, the rains received were not substantial.
