Rise in typhoid cases in Chennai

Posted on: 24/Dec/2013 12:28:07 PM
For the past few weeks there is a rise in typhoid cases in Chennai. This is due to water contamination in several areas of the city. People contract typhoid when they ingest food, water and other liquids infected by salmonella typhi, a disease-causing bacterium that spreads through the faeces of an infected person. Patients come in with symptoms recurring fever, delirium, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

General Physician Dr C Bharaneedharan of Global Health City, who has been treating at least three cases of typhoid every day, says rampant water contamination in a few areas is the main cause for the rise in typhoid cases. Apart from water, contaminated food also causes typhoid. Since it is the festive season, people tend to cook a lot of food and store the excess in the refrigerator which is consumed the next day. Excessive use of canned and refrigerated food is also a cause. The sudden climate change also led to a lot of viral fever cases too.

Tests for typhoid are very unclear in some cases as the antibiotics patients take for the high fever impact the tests, said Dr Bharaneedharan. He warned that those not sticking to the specified diet and discontinuing medication before its course was completed risked facing a relapse
