Posted on: 16/Dec/2013 9:46:44 AM
As a step towards stopping manual labour to clean the drainage systems, Chennai Corporation has decided to arrange test-runs for using new machinery equipment.

About 2,000 km of drainage (pipes) systems is maintained by the Chennai Corporation. Currently, the job cleaning the blockages in the drainage is being carried out by humans. From this year, Chennai Corporation has undertaken the manual checking of drain systems twice in a year to avoid flooding.

When men undertake this work, there is the danger of asphyxiation; there have been some deaths due to this. In order to avoid this, Chennai Corporation has decided to undertake cleaning of the drains by special machines. 2 Sludge removal pumps are being procured for this purpose. Each machine costs R. 10 Lakhs.

If the trial performance is successful, the machines will be procured for each ward. If the trial fails, further trials will be undertaken using different equipment.
