Seat belts compulsory from today

Posted on: 09/Dec/2013 1:06:52 PM
From today, police will from Monday pull over and book motorists not using their seat belts, with the authorities deciding to enforce one of the few remaining rules that so far went unchecked. Police have, in a series of efforts, put rules in force that were routinely flouted. They first cracked down on riders without helmets and then started booking motorists for rash driving. After that, police targeted people riding triples and, most recently, started a major campaign to prevent drunk driving.

Statistics indicate that the move has been successful: There were 168 more fatal accidents till December 8 last year than was in the same period this year.

To make enforcement even stricter, traffic police officers will soon get 100 more e-challan devices. They already have 300.    Apart from eliminating paper work, e-challan machines also keep track of the offences that each vehicle is involved in — with higher fines for repeated errors.

The devices will have GPRS/3G connectivity and printers. They will be connected to servers with data on all vehicles and offences.
