Andaman flights cancelled

Posted on: 26/Nov/2013 11:59:31 AM
Four flights from Chennai, operated by Air India, Go Air, Spicejet and Jet Airways, were cancelled and close to 500 passengers are waiting in the hope that they may be able to fly to Port Blair at least on Tuesday.  All flights to the Andamans were cancelled owing to stormy weather.

As reported, a severe cyclonic storm with windspeeds exceeding 110 kmph, lashed the Andaman and Nicobar Islands through Sunday night. People were evacuated from low-lying coastal areas as a safety measure. Though the storm was expected to move towards the Indian coast by mid-Monday, stormy conditions and thundershowers remained for the most part of the day.

All the airlines have announced that weather permitting, additional flights would be operated to Port Blair at the same time on Tuesday. Asked why they did not operate the flights on Monday evening, airline officials said that after dark, journeys were not favoured at Port Blair because of visibility and wind issues.
