Chennai to Get 245 More Electric Buses by February End - MTC Expansion Update

In a major boost to green public transport, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has announced that 245 additional electric buses will be introduced in Chennai by the end of this month.

625 Electric Buses Project – Current Status

As part of Tamil Nadu’s initiative to replace diesel buses with eco-friendly electric buses, a total of 625 electric buses were ordered.

- 380 electric buses were launched in the first phase.

- The remaining 245 buses are now set to be deployed soon.

The electric bus service was first launched in June 2025 from the Vyasarpadi depot in Chennai and later expanded to Perumbakkam and Poonamallee depots.

Deployment Plan for the New 245 Electric Buses

According to MTC officials:

- Trial runs will begin soon after final production formalities are completed.

- All 245 buses are expected to be operational by the end of February 2026.

- 145 buses will be attached to the Pallavan Illam depot.

- 100 buses will operate from the Thandayarpet depot.

Phase 2 Expansion – 600 More Electric Buses Planned

MTC is also preparing for the second phase, which includes the procurement of 600 additional electric buses to further strengthen Chennai’s sustainable urban transport network.
