Traffic Congestion in T Nagar Chennai: Road Works and Diversions Cause Major Delays

Posted on: 13/Feb/2026 10:15:15 AM

Traffic movement in Chennai has been severely affected as ongoing infrastructure works and forced diversions create heavy congestion in T Nagar, one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs. Commuters are facing long delays due to simultaneous road construction projects and traffic rerouting.

Flyover Construction on Anna Salai Adds Pressure

The State Highways Department is constructing a major flyover on Anna Salai, a key arterial road connecting several parts of the city. To facilitate the construction work, traffic has been diverted into interior roads, including Giriappa Road.

However, these smaller roads are not designed to handle high volumes of diverted vehicles, leading to severe bottlenecks during peak hours.

Stormwater Drain Works Worsen the Situation

At the same time, the Greater Chennai Corporation is carrying out stormwater drain construction in the area. The narrowing of roads due to barricades and ongoing civic works has further reduced available space for vehicles, intensifying congestion.

Key Issues Faced by Commuters:

- Heavy traffic pile-ups during morning and evening peak hours

- Long queues stretching up to 2 km in certain stretches

- Increased travel time for office-goers and shoppers

- Disruption to public transport services

Residents and daily commuters have raised concerns about the lack of coordination between multiple departments handling the projects.

Impact on T Nagar Businesses and Residents

T Nagar is a major shopping and commercial destination in Chennai. Prolonged traffic congestion affects:

- Retail businesses

- Delivery services

- Emergency vehicle access

- Daily commuters and residents

With infrastructure projects continuing across Chennai, traffic diversions and congestion remain key challenges for city authorities.
