CMDA to Fix Skywalk Issues at Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus

Posted on: 12/Feb/2026 12:11:52 PM

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) will soon begin rectification works on the ₹79-crore skywalk connecting the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT) at Kilambakkam with the newly built railway halt station across GST Road.

The 275-metre project is being executed in three phases. While the first phase of deck installation across a portion of GST Road has been completed, minor load deflection beyond permissible limits was flagged by the Centre for Urbanisation, Buildings and Environment (CUBE), an arm of Indian Institute of Technology Madras.

Based on expert advice from IIT-Madras structural engineers, additional weight will be deployed above the deck slab to correct the issue. The work, delayed due to permission requirements on the busy GST Road, is expected to commence by the end of this week.

Officials clarified that no structural concerns have been found in the second stretch of the skywalk. Once rectification is completed, lifts will be installed on both sides to ensure safe pedestrian access. Meanwhile, Southern Railway has completed civil works at the new Kilambakkam halt station.
